Sometime

Several years ago, we stayed home from Spring Break. Actually, our little family has seldom traveled at Spring Break in the 13+ years it has been an option. Time of year, maybe. Lack of funds, probably. It always sounds great, and I talk a lot about it after Christmas, but all the plans peter out as March arrives.

So that year, I spiced up our Kansas City staycation by looking at the list my son and I had been compiling on a notepad in the car of all the places about which I had said, over his lifetime spent in the back seat, “Yeah sweetie. That’s X. We’ll go there sometime,” or, “Oh. I’ve always loved that place. We’ll go there sometime,” and, “Wow. I used to take your Aunt Lindsay and Robin Parks there when they were little like you. I’ll take you there sometime.”

On that staycation we slept late, ate lunch at restaurants new and old, and visited places that we had never been with our son. Browne’s Deli, John Wornall Home, Kearney House Museum, Thomas Hart Benton Home Museum. We did it all. The list was depleted. My husband and I were able to work in fits and starts during that week, and, when the break was over, we all felt like we’d really been somewhere and seen lots of new things. Because we had.

Currently, our son is traveling in China with my husband’s family and we (my husband and me) are in our home alone – with the dog, of course – for three weeks. We both have loads of work to accomplish but have much more flexibility to get it all done without the pull towards wanting to be with our son. Given his busy teenage existence – work, volunteering and goofing off – our times as a threesome have little footing in his regimen this summer.

While he is gone we are having a “foodcation”. Our son has been gone for 6 days, and not one meal has been prepared in the home. I am not a breakfast eater, and lunch is easily acquired from the huge bowl of organic fruit in the kitchen and hurriedly stashed in my bag as I wing out the door for work.

But dinner is another matter. My husband and I had a list much like the “Sometime” list my son and I kept in the car. This list has been growing on my husband’s cell phone/electronic notepad and includes places new and old. We don’t really dine out all that much, and this has been a real treat. So far, mostly dinner. A few lunches.

One of our lunch adventure was to Werner’s in Mission. We sat outside and had a great conversation with one outstanding staff member who was working the grill. She spoke of the butcher and the sausage maker. She mentioned her work and how she hand ties sausages and does additional duty cooking them outside over the grill. She explained to me what the different sausages were on the grill and, in particular, why one was so darned pale. (That was the German bratwurst. It isn’t made from cured or smoked meat.) Inside, one woman behind the counter made our sandwiches from scratch on soft bread and another woman checked us out on an oldish cash register.

Tonight we are off to another restaurant with good friends. A place we haven’t been. An adventure.

Sometime is now.

It is cold in Kansas City. It is hump day. My daughter starts another four day weekend tomorrow because of conferences. I have walked to the fridge 10+ times thinking I will be inspired. Truth be told, this is what I am craving.

You can find Ed’s Lobster Bar in New York City here. Sadly, there isn’t a subway from midtown Kansas City that will take me there. But I will be there again in May.

Now, what should we have for dinner tonight?

The Last Lunch Out

It’s the time of year when people ask, “Do you leave the store?” We do. We go home at night, and we come back the next day. However, leaving for lunch is hard after Thanksgiving.

It’s the time of year when people ask, “Do you leave the store?” We do. We go home at night, and we come back the next day. However, leaving for lunch is hard after Thanksgiving. Today I snuck away and had lunch with my sister, my Dad, my niece and my stepmom after they had been to see Santa. This may be the last day we can do this until January, and that’s OK. We love seeing our customers over their lunch breaks during the holidays. That’s when all the sneaky purchases take place.

Classic Cookie is one of our favorite places for chicken salad. And cookies. But mostly chicken salad. Well, Casey had a roast beef sandwich today, but I think it is because their horseradish sauce and bread are so amazing. Ask her. I really don’t know.

Leslia Stockard owns this great small business, and just this Sunday – yesterday –  she was in STUFF when we were making plans for today’s lunch. Casey asked what the soups were going to be on Monday. Leslie admitted that she didn’t know – but what sounded good? Casey said that she didn’t like beans and left it at that.

The soups today were Mushroom Potato and Beef Barley. Not a bean in sight. You can’t tell me small business doesn’t listen to their customers.

Tonight we headed down to SoHo for dinner and a long post-dinner stroll. I adore New York City at night. You could roam the streets for hours and hours on end. The August weather this year is mild and soft. There was almost a chill in the air as we walked. I did not want the night to end. These images were taken during our wandering.

We discovered a new hotel in New York City. It opened in February of 2012. We took a chance and booked our stay with them. It was a great choice. We really like our digs and are planning to return. You can find this fab little hotel here.

Birthday Lunch

I was cleaning out a drawer in my desk at home recently and I came across this receipt.

On my birthday in 2009 my daughter asked if she could take me to lunch. I, of course, said yes. (Anytime a 5 year old asks you to lunch, you go.) I picked Sol Cantina, because it was a warm sunny day, they have fantastic fish tacos and you can sit outside under festive umbrellas that make you feel like you are on vacation.

It was a delightful birthday lunch. A close friend joined us and we sat talking, laughing, munching and even sipped a margarita or two.

At the end of our meal the check arrived. My daughter picked it up, checked it (very much like her mother usually does), turned to me and said, “Mom, can I borrow the credit card?”.

She presented the credit card to the waiter. And, when the check booklet arrived back, she opened it, signed the check and handed the card back to me without another word.

I will always remember this special day. It hung heavy with glimpses into the future. My daughter becoming her own woman with her own money, her own credit card, her own plans and her own vision for a day.

I am so glad I kept this little scrap of thermal paper. And, I am so glad I came across it before it was completely faded. It brought me unexpected joy. Always a welcome gift.

Brunch-Blocked

I enjoy language. Word play is fun. So, when I recently read the term “brunch-block” in an email, I cracked up.

I enjoy language. Word play is fun. So, when I recently read the term “brunch-block” in an email, I cracked up. The sender was being literal. She was proposing to plan a brunch for a good friend and she discovered that a brunch was already being planned. She then stated that she hadn’t meant to “brunch-block” the host.

I am stealing this term. I will be using it. And, every time I do, it will make me happy.

PS…Since we are talking about brunch, I thought I would share one of my favorite brunch spots.

Pursue Good Stuff goes to Florida

Here is the PURSUE GOOD STUFF travel album from my recent trip to Florida. My sister recently posted an album from Colorado. Like she said, life is about pursuing what is good, ALL that is good. Remember you are not passive…you can pursue good stuff today. That is my goal for the day.

An evening kayak trip.

Explore by kayak.

I great place to sit and watch the surf.

Fresh Georgia peach. Yum.

Good in abundance.

This is the life.

Find a place to PURSUE GOOD STUFF.

Beauty is everywhere.

Sift through your choices in life.

Boats come is all shapes and sizes.

Keep your eyes on the horizon.

Little doesn’t mean small.

Make friends.

There is strength in numbers.

Spark ideas.

Eat well. Grilled Florida shrimp...fresh catch.

Fresh Florida Mussels – OMG – this is some goooooood stuff folks.

Steam up the room.

Walk barefoot in the sand every chance you get.

White sand, sunshine and nothing planned.

And, never forget to play.

 I will pursue good stuff…today.

Resolutions

The first few days of each New Year, I always look for “signs” about my upcoming year. I can’t help myself. Everyone is talking about resolutions and renewed commitments. I tend to wait for a message that will set the tone for my year, something to hold in my tight little fist. Some magic words that I can latch my hopes to for the year.

This past Sunday, while my family and I were ringing in the New Year at Bo Ling’s and I was acting on a renewed commitment to MY Sunday ritual of Chinese dim sum with my daughter, I was thrilled to be given my annual copy of the official Bo Ling’s wall calendar. This isn’t your typical insurance agent calendar giveaway you see; it has the Chinese zodiac predictions for the year.

I ran right home and flipped to the fortunes for my birth year and immediately bust into laughter and said to myself, “See what you get for trying to dick-around with the future?…serves you right. How many times do you have to be told to ‘live in the moment’, Casey? Really, how many fucking times?”

  • I vow to not search for signs.
  • I vow to not be cursed by predictions.
  • I vow to eat the dumplings and leave the fortune cookies on the table.

These are my resolutions for 2011.
