Stacking Stones

This past November, I found myself unexpectedly and briefly on the beach in Montauk, New York, for a couple hours. My friend and I came across some stacked stones. I think stacked stones are magical. And I have played with stacking myself.

Stacked Stones

These unexpected temporary sculptures are the combination of an artist’s desire to create something beautiful and some gifts of nature. Which makes them magical to me.

I took these photos with my phone with the Instagram app. I dig Instagram and would love to see your photos, too. So…find me…caseysimmonsloveswaves and let’s become Instagram buddies.

  1. Looks like this stone sculpture was inspired by Andrew Goldsworthy. If you don’t know his work, be sure and watch the documentary called Rivers and Tides, It is amazing.

    1. Don’t you LOVE Andrew Goldsworthy!!! What an artistic genius. I have admired his work for many years. What a great reminder to go back and see the documentary again…thanks!

  2. Those are so neat…we were in Cannon Beach, OR, last Aug. and saw something similar. I don’t have a pic tho…but just thought I’d share! 🙂 Enjoy you and your sister’s blogs!! Thanks!!

    1. Aren’t they wonderful to happen upon? I have seen them in so many unexpected places. Next time be sure and snap a photo to share with me. I would love to see any of your discoveries. Thanks for reading our blogs. It is fun to share stories and inspirations. Keep the comments coming…always makes me feel happy. 🙂

  3. I like stone stacks or cairns also, I think of them as a spiritual and meditative reminder of past times and persons. In my garden I have a concrete marker where the ashes of my dog Rosebud are buried, with her name stamped into it, and on top I like to stack flat stones. I remember what a wonderful companion she was, how she loved playing in her back yard, and all the years of faithfulness she gave me.

    1. Karen…thank you for sharing this touching story. I think it is a lovely way to take time to think about your Rosebud. It is ongoing and seems like it is helping you find peace. I find stacking stones is meditative too. Keep stackin’.

    1. HA! I think you are right 🙂 Stay tuned for more trip photos on the blog. I finally learned how to get the trapped Instagram photos off my phone. Only took the tech guy at Sprint 30 plus minutes to figure it out. heehee.

  4. and someone tell harl that the blog comment section is kinda messed up. the square where my avatar picture is suppose to be, sits on top of the actual written comment.

  5. They are very cool! In a way they remind me of the prayer stones that loved ones leave on the headstones in Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Europe.

    1. Wow. I love that. My grandfather always placed a penny on headstones. I still don’t know why. I should research that. Thanks for note, Michael.
